[Retrospective] Trevor: One Year in Japan

This episode originally aired in June of 2016, but it was recorded more than a year earlier—on Sunday, April 26th, 2015—back when I knew almost nothing about podcasting. And it shows. The audio is rough, the pacing is loose, and we had no idea what we were doing. But there’s something honest in it. Something that, in hindsight, feels like the start of a long and unexpected journey.

We recorded this on a summer evening in rural Japan, with imported beers in hand and yakitori from a famously grumpy local chef, who, for reasons still unknown, actually agreed to serve us that night. We sat down to talk about… well, whatever was on our minds. In this case, I think it was “cloud theory” and the experience of growing up hafu—a topic I was only beginning to understand.

Rough as it may be, there’s something in this conversation that feels worth preserving.

Looking back now, nearly a decade later, it’s not just the conversation that feels distant. Japan itself has changed. The streets are louder. The temples are more crowded. And I’m a few gray hairs closer to whatever comes after アラフォー, while Trevor is just now easing into his forties.

Consider this a time capsule: two guys, two mics, one strange and beautiful evening in a quieter Japan.
